Learning opportunities for Week 2 are based on Cathy Fosnot’s book “Young Mathematicians at Work: Constructing Multiplication and Division” – Chapter 2.  We will work through one chapter per week for nine weeks.  

If you have ordered the book but it hasn’t arrived yet, Heinemann Publishers have generously allowed us to post digital copies of the Preface, Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 so that you can continue to participate while waiting for your hard copy. Details here

  1. In the scenario of the two girls, and the 3rd grade in action, as you think about the situation (how many boxes for the candy), it has been crafted on purpose.

How is the context crafted to generate the mathematics?  What math ideas will likely be generated?  What strategies will come out of this situation?

What big ideas, strategies and models for the topic of multiplication would be important for us to really craft context to make sure we generate progressive development around them?

2.  Think of your own environment, the culture, the neighbourhood, the town, the school. What problems could you construct from your children’s lives?  What would a nice context be that we could use?
